Sarah Shepard, MD, joined Commonwealth Pediatrics in 2025. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior from the University of South Carolina. She attended the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, and completed her residency at VCU Children’s Hospital of Richmond. She is also honored to be a recipient of the Valerie Currie Primary Care Award.
Dr. Shepard was drawn to pediatrics for the variety of roles it allows. As a pediatrician, she is a healer piecing together complex histories to make diagnoses, an advocate empowering her community, and an educator helping parents care for the physical, emotional, and psychological health of their children.
Her favorite part of being a pediatrician is building long-lasting relationships with patients and families while maintaining open, honest communication. She has particular interests in adolescent medicine, mental health, and dermatology, and is excited and honored to care for the patients at Commonwealth Pediatrics.
Outside of work, Dr. Shepard enjoys spending time with her husband and their dog, exploring local parks, and trying new activities. She loves how the Richmond area offers so many opportunities to pursue different hobbies and interests.
