School and Sports Physicals in Richmond, VA

A yearly physical is part of your child’s wellness visit. Each year, Commonwealth Pediatrics will assess your child’s health by performing screenings such as vision and hearing, measuring growth by height and weight and assessing motor skills and cognitive development. Health screenings at pediatricians are essential components of comprehensive healthcare for children and adolescents.

Many patients may require a mandated physical in order to attend school, participate in sports or attend camp. If you child needs an official physical for any of these activities, our team will perform the exam as required and fill out the needed paperwork.

School Physicals

If your child is kindergarten age, the school he or she will attend requires a physical from a pediatrician. This examination assesses the health of the child and includes an up-to-date immunization record. As a parent, you want the best care for your child while they are at school. The school physical documents:

  • Chronic medical conditions that your child may have, like asthma or allergies, which affect how your child is cared for during school hours

  • Medical history that may influence care

  • Medication for certain medical conditions, such as an epi-pen. The school physical will provide detailed instructions on when the medication is to be administered

  • Physical limitations that may require school accommodations

It is important to provide the most up-to-date information regarding your child’s health to the school nurse so that the proper care can be administered when necessary.

Sports Physicals

If your child is involved in sports, you probably are aware that a sports physical is required at the beginning of each season. A sports physical is important because it provides the most current information on your child’s health as well as an assessment of their ability to participate in the sport.

Sports physicals help to determine if your child has any underlying medical conditions that may affect their ability to participate. If your child is injured during a sporting event or activity, this examination can help guide the coach and/or trainer on how to best care for your child. This examination includes an evaluation of:

  • Muscle strength and flexibility

  • Posture and scoliosis screening

  • Heart rate and rhythm

  • Lungs

  • Bones and joints

  • Height

  • Weight

  • Blood pressure
