Feeding Your Baby
Feeding your newborn baby is an intimate and bonding experience for both parents and child. For infants, proper nourishment is vital for healthy growth and development. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusively breastfeeding infants until six months of age. The primary source of nutrition for newborns is breast milk, which provides essential nutrients and antibodies to strengthen a baby’s immune system. Breastfeeding also creates a special bond between the mother and the baby, promoting emotional connection and comfort.
When Do I Start Breastfeeding?
It’s recommended to begin breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth, ideally within the first hour, to take advantage of the colostrum, a nutrient-rich substance produced in the initial days of lactation. Frequent and unrestricted breastfeeding is encouraged, as newborns have small stomachs and need to feed often to stay satisfied and hydrated. Commonwealth Pediatrics is pleased to provide experienced lactation consultants to help new mothers adjust to the challenges of nursing or answer any questions about breastfeeding. If you would like to schedule an appointment with one of our lactation experts, fill out our online appointment request form.
In some situations where breastfeeding is not possible, formula milk can be a suitable alternative. Modern infant formulas are designed to mimic the composition of breast milk and provide the necessary nutrients for the baby’s healthy growth.
How Will I Know When My Baby Is Hungry?
Whether you are exclusively breastfeeding or bottle feeding your baby, it’s essential to pay close attention to the baby’s hunger cues and feeding patterns. These cues may include rooting, smacking lips, sucking on fingers or turning towards the breast or bottle. Commonwealth Pediatrics recommends feeding the baby on demand rather than adhering to a strict schedule, as babies have different appetites and growth spurts.
Infant Care Checkups
After your baby is born, you will visit Commonwealth Pediatrics on a regular basis for checkups with your pediatrician. Newborn visits are essential for monitoring growth and development.
