Pediatric Care FAQs

You should take your child to a pediatrician for regular checkups, vaccinations, developmental assessments and whenever they are sick or showing unusual symptoms.

We recommend explaining the purpose of your visit to your child in simple terms. Bringing in comfort items and distractions, such as toys or books, can also help your child feel more at ease. Our providers are also specially trained to make your child’s experience be as comfortable and gentle as possible.

While there is no set age for transitioning to an adult healthcare provider, we usually care for those up to age 18 or sometimes even 21.

Well-child checkups are typically recommended at specific intervals: at 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months, 30 months, 3 years, 4 years, and then yearly from ages 5 through 21. If you have any questions or concerns, we are more than happy to discuss how often you should bring your child in for checkups.

We have three locations in the Richmond metro area for your convenience: Old Jahnke Road, Harbour Pointe and Westchester Commons. For more information about each of our locations, we invite you to check out Our Locations page.

Vaccinations help protect children from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases. They also contribute to community immunity, preventing the spread of diseases. Your child’s health and safety is our top priority, which is why we recommend your child receive vaccines.

We understand that new mothers need support when learning to breastfeed their babies. We are happy to provide lactation consultations with our Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). To learn more about breastfeeding, we invite you to check out our Lactation Consultation page. To make an appointment, call us today at (804) 549-5405 or request an appointment online here.

If your child is experiencing a life-threatening emergency or a serious injury or accident, we recommend taking your child to the nearest emergency room. However, if you are able to take your child to Chippenham ER, we recommend taking them there, as they have an excellent Pediatric ER.

If possible, we also recommend notifying our office before you leave for the hospital so that we can help. When our office is closed, a physician will still be on call to answer after-hours emergencies. However, if you cannot get through to us, please call 911 or go straight to the emergency room. Our physicians have privileges at CJW Medical Center’s Chippenham and Johnston-Willis campuses. Please be aware that your insurance company may not pay for services rendered at these facilities.
