FAQs About Pediatric Care

As a parent, it is normal to have questions about your child’s care and development. At Commonwealth Pediatrics, our experienced team is here to help you every step of the way! We prioritize patient and parent education and aim to thoroughly outline everything you need to know to parent your child with confidence. Explore some of our frequently asked questions about pediatric care below. Don’t see an answer to your question? Call our Harbour Pointe office at (804) 739-8166.

It’s recommended to schedule your child’s first pediatrician visit within the first week after birth. This initial visit is important for assessing your baby’s overall health, growth, and development. At Commonwealth Pediatrics, we also encourage expecting patients to schedule an appointment to tour the office and receive breastfeeding guidance before the baby is born.

Regular well-child check-ups are crucial for monitoring your child’s health and development. These visits are typically scheduled at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 months of age, and annually thereafter.

Immunizations are an essential part of pediatric care. Your pediatrician will provide a recommended immunization schedule to protect your child against serious diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio and more.

Fevers are common in children and are often caused by infections. Your pediatrician can advise you on appropriate fever-reducing measures and when to seek medical attention based on your child’s age and symptoms. Recommendations may include taking over-the-counter fever reducers, rest and hydration. If your child has a high fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or has not seen an improvement in their symptoms in 4-5 days, please schedule a sick child care visit at one of our offices.

Ensuring that your child gets enough sleep is crucial for their overall health, development and well-being. Your pediatrician at Commonwealth Pediatrics may recommend establishing a consistent bedtime routine, limiting screen time, monitoring caffeine intake and more.

While you cannot always prevent illnesses, you can encourage your child to wash their hands, get adequate sleep, maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly and more.

Expert Pediatricians. Gentle and Kid-Friendly Care. Peace Of Mind.
